Description

This Outline of Investigation is intended to be used in conjunction with the Standard for Electromechanical Elementary Relays ? Part 1: General Requirements, UL 61810-1, hereafter referred to as UL 61810-1. The numbering of the Clauses in this Outline of Investigation corresponds to like numbered Clauses in UL 61810-1. The requirements of UL 61810-1 apply except as modified or supplemented by this Outline of Investigation.

This Outline applies to EV relays rated 1000 V or less, AC and/or 1500 V or less DC. This Outline applies to relays intended for use as switching devices in an electric vehicle power circuit. Compliance with this Outline is acceptable for use as a component of an end-product.

The acceptability of a relay in any particular Electric Vehicle depends upon its ability to be used continuously under the conditions that prevail in actual service. The operating voltages in an Electric Vehicle are much higher than the traditional 12 V dc lead-acid battery systems in most internal combustion engine-driven vehicles. This requires relays used in electric vehicle to be subjected to different requirements from those applied to relays used in an internal combustion engine-driven vehicle. Accordingly, for a particular Electric Vehicle application a relay may be affected by the requirements for the equipment it is used in, and it may be necessary to additionally evaluate features or performance characteristics that are not specified in this Outline.
